Fuel Watch

Diesel fuel (ULSD) settled at 5.596 per gallon for the week ending May 18, down 0.76 percent from 5.639 the prior week. Month-to-date average stands at 5.625, a 2.25 percent rise versus April's 5.5012. Class I carriers' fuel surcharges remain stable into June: BNSF 61 cents/mile, UP 69 cents/mile, NS 76 cents/mile, CSXT 44 cents/mile, CN 77 cents/mile, and CPKC 74 cents/mile.

Commodity Spotlight

Grain carloads jumped 9.8 percent year-over-year for the week ending May 16, with 23173 units moved. Petroleum and petroleum products also posted a 9.8 percent gain at 11278 carloads, while forest products climbed 8.9 percent to 8636 units. Coal declined 6.2 percent to 55302 carloads, dragging overall carload growth.
