Rail fuel surcharges run on a two-month lag to this number, so October's factors below reflect August diesel, and November will step again. Truck reprices the same week.
DAT's forecast for late October puts flatbed linehaul at $2.55 a mile against $2.05 a year ago, and van at $2.15 against $1.69. Load posts hit 2.9 million, +16% week over week.

Shuttle cars in the secondary market bid $525 a car over tariff for September 17 GTR, September delivery; non-shuttle $113 over. Class I grain tariffs step up in October: BNSF +$200 per car on most PNW origins, UP +$225, CPKC +$225, CN +$275 in September and +$330 from October to December 1 (USDA GTR).
Railcar leasing: GATX's Q2 2026 index shows renewals repricing +16.8% above expiring rates on 54-month terms at 98.0% utilization. Q3 results expected late October.

UP-NS merger, STB docket FD 36873. Summary-denial motions from BNSF, CSX and a shipper coalition were denied September 18. Notices of intent to participate are due September 30. Comments on the merits are due November 18, replies February 16, 2027.
